Have you wanted to complete a home improvement project... but been scared away by “horror stories” of from TV or friends? While these stories happen and get passed around, the majority of Remodeling projects go well and result in improved value, functionality, and pleasure for the home owner. So what should you expect from a remodeling project and how do you make sure that your project is successful?
What to expect...
1.You will need to make changes to your routine to accommodate the project. From extreme examples of moving out of your house for a period of time to just having to walk to a different bathroom the project will have some effect on your daily routine.
2.There will be noise and activity. The combination of additional people, tools, trucks, equipment, etc. will be noisy.
3.Unexpected things will happen. No project is perfect. The complexity of integrating new materials, labor, subcontractors, etc. into an existing home will result in something that doesn't go as planned. Be prepared for the unexpected.
4.You will have to make a lot of decisions. Picking out all the things for you project does take some effort and time. If you like having time with decisions to make sure you get exactly what you want, be sure and start early. A full service remodeling contractor and / or designer can help you save time with a lot of those decisions.
5.You will have some fun with your project. As your home starts to change, coming home each day is exciting as anticipation builds for the finished project.
6.You will get “antsy” at the end of the project. The combination of waiting and the disruption of your lifestyle will make your desire to see the project end very strong. The project will take some time and won't be done “over night.”
7.You will meet some great new people. The people that will work in your home love what they do and are passionate about helping transform your home.
8.And best of all, this effort will result in a much more enjoyable home that meets your needs and desires.
How to have a successful project...
1.Remember “what to expect” from above. Knowing what to expect is key to lowering your stress level during the project.
2.Choose the right company for you. You will have to work closely together to complete your project, so you want to be working with someone you trust and can get along with.
3.Choose an established remodeling company. Choosing a “builder” or small “handyman” to complete a remodeling project can have major consequences. Remodeling projects are unique with unique challenges and working with a company that specializes in this type of project is key.
4.Get away. Remodeling is stressful, and getting away is helpful for your sanity. Go on vacation, go out to eat, visit a local attraction that you never made it to, but find some way to give yourself a break from the disruption and noise.
5.Communicate quickly. If you have a question or concern ask. If you wait it may be to late.
6.Talk to friends who have had similar projects completed. You may be able to learn some “tips” from them on how to manage your project.
7.Start early. It is important to give enough time for the planning stage of a project. So don't wait until the last minute to contact someone and start preparing for your project. For example if you want your project completed in the spring so you can enjoy it for the summer, start in the fall.
8.Think about times of the year when you don't want your house disrupted and plan accordingly. It may be the holidays or when the kids are out of school in the summer, but take time to think about your families annual calendar.
9.Think about your budget. Remodeling projects vary greatly in cost. Knowing what you are comfortable spending and communicating that early will help your contractor and / or designer develop a project that meets your needs and goals within your budget.
10.Prioritize your needs. Know what is really important to you and focus on those projects first. That way your budget doesn't get spent on something that isn't as important to you.
11.Smile, relax and have fun!
