Fertilize your yard

Spring is the best time to add fertilizer to your yard. A slow release organic fertilize will do a better job. Start with a broadcast spreader and go around the perimeter of the yard, then back and forth across the yard making sure to overlap each pass.

Prepare your mower

Winter is a good time to service your mower, before you are spending your time using it. Make sure that the blade is nice and sharp so that it cuts the grass rather than tearing it. The blade should be sharpened after each 8-12 hours of usage.

Pull the weeds

In the spring after the rains the weeds pop up. Now is a good time to pull them. The ground is softer so they come out easier and since they grow first they are easier to see.

Repair bare patches

Seeding bare patches in the early spring gives the grass a chance to get rooted before the summer heat. Make sure to use a seed appropriate for its location, whether full sun or shade. Then scatter seed by hand on bare patches and cover seed with straw or peat moss to retain moisture and help seed germinate.

Overseed thin areas

Use a broadcast spreader to over-seed thin areas. Then apply a fertilizer formulated for new lawns and water daily for a week or two to allow the new seed to get started. This will help establish a thick full yard which will crowd out weeds and retain moisture.

Don’t cut the grass to short

Let the grass grow to 3-4 inches. This allows the grass to shade the soil and retain moisture which is critical during the summer months. This will also allow repairs and over-seeding to get well established before being cut.
